Project Raptor

Project Raptor is rooted in a simple but powerful idea: reconnecting people to nature through the ancient art of falconry. At its heart, the project supports veterans and individuals living with mental health challenges, offering a shared space where meaningful experiences with birds of prey can promote empowerment, recovery, and healthy human development.

Falconry is a unique and mutually beneficial partnership between raptor and falconer. It is an ancient tradition that fosters patience, trust, and deep respect for the natural world. By preserving falconry, we not only keep these cultural practices alive, but also help protect raptors, their prey, and the habitats they depend on.

Project Raptor is shaped by lived experience. It is founded on the understanding of what it means to face mental health challenges, physical disability, and the transition from military life. This perspective drives a commitment to creating inclusive, supportive environments where people can reconnect—with nature, with others, and with themselves.

A key part of this journey has been the support of Darren, who has been part of The Engine Room for over 20 years. Through this partnership, Project Raptor has been nurtured, supported, and encouraged to grow into a community-led initiative.

At the centre of the programme is Antal, our therapy hawk. Antal has helped many people rediscover a sense of purpose and connection. There’s something undeniably special about him-many describe it as a kind of magic. Through time spent with Antal, participants experience calm, focus, and a renewed sense of possibility.

Our voluntary-led programme combines falconry with creativity, walking, and time in nature. Together, these elements create space for reflection, peer support, and personal growth. We explore how working with raptors can help build stronger, healthier communities and a more connected society.

Project Raptor exists to educate, illuminate, and encourage.
